Michelle Li shares the recipe for her mother's nian gao with red bean.
Michelle Li weaves her words just as skillfully as she matches crisp pleats with colorful plaids. When it’s time for the New York-based writer and stylist to cook, her chosen recipe is a simple and familiar one: nian gao with red bean, a sticky, sweet rice cake that her mother made for her growing up. “My parents weren't big on sweets but this was something I always looked forward to my mom making,” she tells Family Style. “I can remember all of the different smells every step of the way as I watched her make this from our childhood kitchen.”
