Multi-media artist Daniel Turner doesn’t do frills––at work or at breakfast.
Daniel Turner is focused on materials and context. The Brooklyn-based visual artist creates stirring, austere, post-minimalist sculptures. Since spring of 2023, Turner has been represented by the international gallery Hauser & Wirth. His debut solo exhibition with the gallery, in which he dislodged and repurposed materials from a Southern Californian power plant into painting, sculpture, and film, opened at its Los Angeles location this year. This sort of process echoes across Turner’s work, from transforming radiators and oil tanks from labs and facilities into dispersed bars of steel at Kunsthalle Basel in 2022 to melting down parts of the Eleven Madison Park kitchen for the restaurant’s new space in 2017. The absorbing quality of his work is rooted in the reduction of objects into material, and his re-contextualization of this material into forms of meditative and minimalistic celebration. It seems fitting that Turner gives Family Style his breakfast. “A classic, clean staple,” Turner says. A collection of materials: transformed, recontextualized, and individually celebrated in a bowl.
