Chanel is back in Washington, D.C.—and this time, it is bigger and better than ever. Earlier this month, the house unveiled its newly renovated boutique at Tysons Galleria mall. Spearheaded by New York-based architect Peter Marino, the design of the new location interweaves the spirit of the capital as well as founder Gabrielle Chanel’s famed Paris apartment. The result is a harmonious blend of modern elegance and timeless sophistication.
Stretching across 5,000 square feet and 10 individual salons, the space is a sprawling paradise bathed in hues of gold and black. The floor of the one-story boutique is blanketed by bespoke carpeting made from wool and silk. The neutral tones serve as a perfect backdrop to showcase all 12 shades of the house’s exclusive 31 Le Rouge lipstick available in the dedicated fragrance and beauty salon.
Throughout the boutique, custom woven fabrics drape elegantly across a selection of furniture carefully selected by Marino, the brand’s longtime collaborator and visionary behind one of Manhattan’s most luxurious condominiums. Marino sought to channel Gabrielle Chanel’s love for the arts along with her infamous 31 Rue Cambon home through a curated array of modern and antique paintings, photographs, and sculptures.
Upon entering one of the two ready-to-wear salons, the latest pieces from Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2024 collection are framed by a black, geometric canvas by American artist Marc Swanson and a silver gelatin print of Athens’ Parthenon by German photographer Vera Lutter. In another salon dedicated to shoes, two bronze chairs by New York- and Athens-based design team Voukenas Petrides sit beneath a custom chandelier consisting of seventeen hexagonal pieces of rock crystal designed by renowned Parisian goldsmith and longtime Chanel partner, Goossens.
Artists and designers are featured throughout the Washington store, including Johan Creten and Erwan Boulloud. Even the walls of the three fitting rooms are adorned with artwork by Peter Dayton, Alastair Gordon, and Agnes Martin. Chanel’s revitalized Tysons Galleria space is a tapestry of the old and the new, allowing clients to bask in the present while preserving the legacy of the past.
