Photographer François Coquerel returns to a modest yet nostalgic classic: instant noodle soup.
François Coquerel’s photographic mise-en-scène are atmospheric, colorful, and nearly theatric. Naturally, his creature comforts resort to something close to the heart: salty, warm noodles. Coquerel associates his childhood favorite, instant noodle soup, with venturing outside the city limits. “The most significant dish for me emotionally dates back to childhood, unsurprisingly enough,” he says. “As it turns out, my mother was a very bad cook, or rather she would get bored making dinner every night, so when we arrived for weekends in the countryside late at night, we would often have Instant Noodle Soup.” The ease of this meal mirrors the ease of laying eyes on the visual feasts Coquerel creates. “Something quick, piping hot and spicy we could eat before bed,” he adds. “I loved that more than anything.”
