Downtown Manhattan’s beloved Claud celebrates its two-year-anniversary with a decorative spin on its foodie-favorite devil's food cake.
This week marks hot-spot Claud’s two-year anniversary in New York City. To celebrate, the wine-forward eatery has collaborated on a special edition of its wildly popular, chocolatey devil's food cake: a limited edition, hand-painted and -poured candle made in collaboration with Grace Bautista, the Bronx-based designer and owner of The Wednesday Co.
Scaled to size, the candle looks—and smells—exactly like a signature oversized slice (billed as “a cake for two”). The collaboration is true to Bautista’s photorealistic approach that has turned other mouth-watering creations, like fruit-topped french toast or a classic croissant, into aromatic, soy-wax torches. The celebration also marks the 10-year-anniversary of owners Joshua Pinsky and Chase Sinzer’s friendship, which was born in 2014 when both met while working nearby at Momofuku Ko. Since opening, Claud’s acclaim has spilled over to Pinsky and Sinzer’s upstairs counterpart, Penny, the 31-seat, walk-in raw bar and seafood counter that opened last year.
Two years in, and the East Village restaurant has become a mainstay. Off East 10th Street, between 3rd and 4th avenues, it is best known for its relaxed, Parisian atmosphere and infamous waits. Those who have been lucky enough to snag a seat return for the diverse array of wines, signature dishes like the chicken liver agnolotti and pork chop with smoked onion jus—and, of course, its cake.
Devil's Food for Two Custom Candle is available in a limited batch on Claud's website. Claud is located at 90 E 10th St Ground Floor, New York, NY 10003.
