The enigmatic musician and visual artist imbues everything she does with poetry. Here, she shares a boiled potatoes recipe that will warm both stomachs and hearts.
It is no surprise to anyone who has ever heard the haunting, unflinching ballads of Anohni that the mononymous artist is uncompromising in her personal life, too. The English-born singer-songwriter and visual artist became the first openly transgender performer nominated for an Academy Award in 2016. She first garnered international recognition as the front-woman of the alternative band Anohni and the Johnsons (previously Antony and the Johnsons) before she emerged with her widely-anticipated debut solo album titled Hopelessness, which earned nominations for a Mercury Prize in 2016 as well as Best British Female at the 2017 BRIT Awards. The multifaceted artist is known for using songs as Trojan Horses to grapple with pertinent societal and political issues that span from climate change (“4 Degrees”) to human rights (“Drone Bomb Me”) to government intervention (“Obama”). Anohni’s provocative sonic oeuvre extends to the visual. Her paintings and sculptures on subjects such as the AIDS crisis and nuclear waste disposal have been displayed at esteemed art galleries worldwide. Now, sharing a simple yet profound recipe with Family Style, Anohni finds poetry in growing potatoes, urging that you “eat them slowly by the fire with someone you love.”
